Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Today we have so many worldviews and ideas of the afterlife. We all claim to have some sort of idea of what is true and how to get to our version of afterlife. I believe we can have assurance in Jesus, that what he says is true.
Jesus’ statement, “I am the resurrection and the life” tells us that Jesus is the source of the resurrection and life. Jesus did not simply claim to know where it was hidden or where you could find it. Rather, Jesus said that he IS the resurrection and the life, and more than that, by believing in Jesus you too can have resurrection and life.
So, what does the bible claim about resurrection and life?
Very simply, resurrection is the overcoming or conquering of death. Here, Jesus boldly declares that he is that one who overcomes and defeats death, that death has no hold, no power over him.
Why does this matter?
Power over death and the promise of resurrection points to a life beyond this one. We live in a world of decay and death, not of everlasting life or peace. To know that Jesus has overcome death is a great comfort and offers us a wonderful hope that by believing in Jesus we can look forward to a life after this one.
The best part is that Jesus didn’t just say it, he did it. We can have confidence because we have seen it in Jesus’ own death and resurrection.
“The resurrection of Jesus changes the face of death for all His people. Death is no longer a prison, but a passage into God’s presence” (Clarence W. Hall).
Do you believe this? Jesus challenged the audience to believe. I encourage you to consider your own response to this question. Do you believe Jesus is who he said he is and that he can do what he said he can do?
