Menai Anglican Church is a relatively young church, founded in October 1982 in the downstairs rumpus room of a local house in Reid Place Illawong. MAC began with a core group of about 35 adults and almost as many children.

From the beginning we have been a ‘kids friendly’, family oriented and inclusive church, while striving for the kind of unity that is biblical and healthy.

In our early years we majored on family style gatherings with lots of picnics and outreach and baptisms. ‘Christianity Explained’ was the course we used to reach out to new comers. In 1984 we were able to purchase 5 acres of land at Lucas Heights and introduce a Sunday evening service. Furthur borrowings enables us to complete our own church building by October 1986.

By 1987 Sunday attendance had risen to over 200. In 1989 we held our first ‘early church’ (8am) Holy Communion service and by the time we were 10 years old in 1992 our staff had grown to 3 and a half and attendance went past the 300 mark.

The earlier mentioned large number of children had now become a large number of youth and we focused much energy and resources into a number of youth communities. Sunday Night Celebration was soon to become the biggest service of the day and our overall weekly attendance reached 500 a few years ago. The major new building additions came ‘online’ in October 2001. These facilities have contributed significantly to our ability to grow our youth and children’s work.

At the beginning of 2002, Sunday Night Celebration became Saturday Night Celebration and a new Sunday evening service commenced so now we have four services each weekend. Our network of ‘Small Groups’ has grown to over 80 groups. We have a strong seniors’ ministry called ‘Quality Time’ and we are still very committed to reach all of our neighbours with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Throughout our history we have also maintained a strong commitment to a number of ‘link missionaries’ working all around the world. We are still striving to be a faithful, loving and welcoming Christian family which brings Christ to the lost, growth to believers and honour to God. We are at both a challenging and exciting stage in our journey and would love to have you join us.
